The second reading also talked about the history of the African music, but it got a little deeper. This had me wanting to learn more about the history of all kinds of music. It made me realize that all kinds of music stem from each other. They all borrow things from one another and that is what makes music so beautiful.

It also made me think back to the times of slavery and how they would sing songs as a message to one another. I thought that was really cool how they were communicating with each other out in the open about escaping and the master or overseer did not know. It made me realize how creavtive my people are and how even with all the oppression we have faced in our history we have always and will always over come. All in all, I believe that this was a really good chapter.

I have never really been interested in the history of music or how it all orginated, but I do love music. The fact that I am not musically talented more than likely has something to do with my being uninterested in the background of music. Nevertheless, Deep Blues opened my eyes to things I never knew. There was a lot of talk about the history of African music. It discussed a type of music called Blue. This chapter states that this type of music originated in Africa.

It goes on to talk about how African music was originated. It was neat the way the story painted a picture in my mind of the workers digging and singing their songs. A more hilarious part of the story was the way the white man was singing along with them and trying to remember their songs. Overall I thought this portion was pretty good and I can not wait to read more.

Señor Rockie Charles

I wasn’t really paying much attention when Rockie Charles visited. One thing I remember from class was when he mentioned that he worked on a boat and if he didn’t have music, his life would’ve been as a worker on that boat. A cool thing I noticed about both Rockie Charles and Little Freddie King is the way they pronounce “guitar”. They pronounce it with a, I assume, Southern accept that goes more like GIT-tah compared to standard English (or the way I pronounce it), which is guh-TAR. They put their emphasis on the first syllable, compared to the my way which emphasizes the second syllable. In the way they pronounce it, the first syllable had an “Ih” sound in contrast to the “Uh” sound. Their second syllable ends with an “Ah” in contrast to the “Ar” sound. I just thought this was interesting.

Monsieur Little Freddie King

I was jotting down stuff from Little Freddie King’s presentation and what I have is that one time he stole his dad’s guitar, which resulted in him getting beat by his dad and a horse (this is what I have on paper), he made his own guitar when he was younger and used the horse’s tail hair as strings for his guitar, he was quite a risk taker, and cop 17. I’m assuming when I wrote down cop 17, I was reffering to the cop that Freddie talked about that had the number 17 on his car. Freddie first met this cop when he was walking up and down the street while searching for his sister’s house. He had other encounters with this cop afterwards and the cop eventually threatened to bring Freedie to jail if he saw him on the street again since he was a black kid and seemed suspicious. The way Freddie depicted it, the cop wasn’t too mean, though. He even taught Freddie about the address number on houses. That’s not too bad right?

Mr. Johnson seemed pretty cool. I liked his smile, if that’s not an inappropriate thing to say. He had a “deep” and sincere smile. To me, his smile was saying, “I’m truly happy with myself. I’ve been through many hard times, but it’s all good. I’m happy.” I don’t know how to elaborate further, but this is what I got from seeing his smile or at least remembering how it looked like. About Carnival Time, I never knew how famous it was. It sounded familiar when they played it during class, but it wasn’t something that I remember. I’ve lived in New Olreans for about 16 years, but that song doesn’t pop up when I think of Mardi Gras. Maybe I’m getting in touch with the wrong part of the Mardi Gras or not getting in touch enough with the right parts.

The best thing I liked about this symposium was that it was located in the pharmacy building, which where my future classes are going to take place!! (or I hope they would..) This symposium was on studying abroad and the resources in the library. I wasn’t really interested in the studying abroad program because I’ve already decided that I wouldn’t. I know it’s a tremendous experience to go to different places, learn a little bit of many different cultures, and learn other new things, but it’s not something that would help me reach my life’s goal quicker, which is to support my family. Maybe when I’ve gotten my family and myself settled, I would travel just experience new things, but not now. The library part of the symposium was good because students need to know about all the things the library has to offer. I’ll admit that I did doze off a bit during the presentation because it wasn’t interesting. Yes, the resources in the library is good to know about, but it’s just not that interesting.

This symposium kept me awake. The speaker was very hyper and related to the students well. One thing that I remembered the most from this symposium and will never forget is the “T.” The “T” is the seating area in a classroom where, according to the booklet, students tend to do better if they sit in that area. The “T” is composed of the very first rows and follows down the middle aisle. From a bird’s eye view, it looks like a T. I’ve always tried to think of solutions to help me be a better student in my classes. I needed solutions to help me not daze off, take better notes, or participate more. The “T’ is one of the best solutions that actually works for me. I’ve found out that I’m more attentive when I sit somewhere in the “T” and, sometimes, I catch notes that I wouldn’t have if I was sitting in the “U,” the non-”T” area of the class room. That was pretty much the best thing I got out of this symposium.

Deep Blues Reflection 2

Overall, the second half of Deep Blues was still boring to me. It was another history lesson. What I didn’t realize before reading this text was how much of an influence music from different cultures had on each other. It made me think about today’s culture and how the mixed genres of music make some of the best songs, for example, Kevin Rudolph’s Let It Rock.In this song, Kevin features the renowned Hip-Hop artist, Lil Wayne. Along with the Rock style melodies of the instruments and beats and Lil Wayne’s rapping, this song became one of my favorites on my playlist. Another mix of music genres that i really like is Classical and Hip-Hop. There’s something about the mix of the emotion from the violins or melodies from pianos and the Hip-Hop beats that really gets to me. I guess you can say this reading wasn’t too bad, since it got me thinking about how awesome music is.

In Deep blues it is about a man named Charles Peabody. He went to Coahoma Count to begin archaeological excavations at some Indian mounds. On his way he picked up some black workmen. As they continued to travel, to Peabody’s surprise the workmen began to sing. When they reached their destination they continued to sing and work. Peabody was very interested in the music they were singing and the differences between what he usually heard. Also in deep blues it talks about how the blues was derived from African music by the first African slaves. Back home in Memphis I hear a lot of blues. We even have a whole street that plays blues all the time called Beale Street its almost like Bourbon.

The library informational was a little bit boring. The information they gave us was useful but it was repeatitive considering most of us heard that when our english class had a research paper due. But I guess it is better to hear it twicw than none at all.

The interesting part of this symposium was the studyaboard portion. I was very interested in completing one of those programs. I had been thinking about do something of that sort and this imformational was very helpful in helping me make my decision as to if this is something that I would like to do. The amount of programs that Xavier offers is outstanding. I had no idea there were so many programs in so many different countries. I always thought that if I completed a program it would be in London, but now I may go to another country and try to learn a different language.
